VERNAL POOL PROTECTION.

San Diego's vernal pools are fleeting water bodies that fill up during rainy years, and then vanish later in the season. These miniature ecosystems host numerous rare and endangered species. There are about 2,591 vernal pools in the city of San Diego, and about 600 of those are protected in city-run preserves. The Del Mar Mesa community of Alta Del Mar y hosts three large protected areas on the south end of Shaw Valley. Many more exist in Del Mar Mesa Preserve.

Wildlife Challenges.

"Vernal pool environments like those on [200 acre Shaw Valley land] include endangered flora & fauna including:  Otay Mesa mint, Spreading navarretia, San Diego button-celery, San Diego fairy shrimp."-- San Diego Vernal Pool Conservation Plan
